How to commission paintings of horses

How does the process work?

How much does it cost?

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

Do you cover my area?

Can you do my painting urgently?

Can you frame the painting as well?

What painting technique(s) do you use?

Can you produce a painting
from my photograph?

How does the process work?

1 • After initial discussions by phone / email, I will quote you either a fixed price or estimated price, dependent upon whether your requirements are clear at that point.

2 • A deposit is paid, and we arrange a mutually convenient date for me to visit youself and the horse(s) in question.

3 • At the time of my visit, I will make studies (photographic and/or sketches) and work with you to establish how the painting should look, at a basic level.

4 • Back in my studio, I will then compose a further study to refine the composition and content of the intended painting. This will be emailed to you as a high quality image, for your approval.

5 • Production of the finished painting then begins. When finished, I will again email a high quality copy to you for your approval. Should any adjustments be necessary, these would be implemented and proofed afresh.

6 • With approval of the painting proof, the outstanding costs are then invoiced and paid. Upon reciept of payment, I will then post or hand deliver the finished painting.

How much does it cost?

There are 3 key factors affecting cost:

• Size of finished painting

• Complexity of content

• Distance of subject from where I live

My basic price starts from £525 for a single horse on a plain / simple background, sized A3 or less.

Using the table to the right:

• Add 25% extra for each and any additional horse

• Add 20% extra for a scenic background

• There is no travel charge for my initial visit within a 30 mile radius. 2nd visits and / or distances over 30 miles are charged at an amount to cover my costs.

• Delivery is at cost, by agreed arrangement

Please note: The above is intended as a guide for your general appraisal of the prices involved in a commission. Each commission is unique, and I will provide you with definitive costings, when all the requirements are known.

A deposit of 30% (non-returnable) is required before my initial visit - an invoice will be supplied.

Should you wish to leave deciding upon aspects of size and content until after an initial visit, I will propose a suitable deposit upon which to proceed.

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

Not essential, but helpful!

I consider it an integral part of my service to provide each client with as much guidance as they require.

If you wish to commission a painting, but are uncertain what sort of composition would serve you best, we can discuss ideas and options in detail when I visit.

If we are unable to tie down precise costings before my visit, I will propose a suitable deposit (non-returnable), to cover the visit and the preparation of proposal(s).

We will at that point then know the full costs, and the decision is yours on whether to proceed with a finished painting.

Do you cover my area?

I am ready to travel anywhere within the UK.

I live and work in the Southdowns (nr. Chichester), in West Sussex and will make my initial visit without travel charge to any client within a 30 mile radius.

2nd visits and / or clients further than 30 miles away, I will charge an amount sufficient to cover the travel (and if necessary, accommodation) costs incurred.

Can you do my painting urgently?

If at all possible, I will accommodate urgent requests, though this can only be answered when all circumstances are known, and balanced against my current workload.

Should you have an urgent request, please ring me straight away, and we can discuss what may be achieved.

Can you frame the painting as well?

In general, I do not supply frames, though I am happy to advise on options to suit the intended hanging space.

I can also supply contacts for framing services in your own area, should this be required.

What painting technique(s) do you use?

I mostly work in Acrylics on canvas or board. My brush style is to apply quite thin layers of paint which are built up to achieve depth of colour and tone - this medium gives a finish very similar to oils.

I will also work in oils if required, though I add a 10% additional fee for the extra time this medium takes to complete.

Can you produce a painting from my photograph?

As a rule, I do not accept commissions using client’s photographs as reference - though there are a few reasons for exception, such as the horse being deceased.

To consider any supplied photograph, it must be well lit, printed at A5 size or larger, and showing clear detail in all areas.
